POSITION SUMMARY

The Calaveras County Substance Abuse Program of the Health and Human Services Agency is seeking a Counselor to join their amazing team. This position will provide substance use disorder treatment services for youth 12-17 and their families.  This is a part-time position that will work Tuesday-Thursday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and comes with a comprehensive benefits package.  Youth treatment services are provided at schools and in the community and may require schedule flexibility.

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor I

Under general direction and close supervision, provides alcohol/substance abuse education, counseling, crisis intervention and case management services; assists with the planning, implementation and provision of alcohol/substance abuse prevention and education activities and programs. Performs related work as assigned.

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor II

Under general direction and supervision, provides alcohol/substance abuse education, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and case management services for programs such as the Driving under the Influence Programs and the Intensive Outpatient

Program. Assists with the planning, implementation and provision of alcohol/substance abuse prevention and education programs. Performs related work as assigned.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor I

This is the entry-level position in the Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor job classification series. Applicants are expected to possess knowledge about alcohol/substance abuse and addiction issues; best practices and techniques commonly used to treat individuals with substance abuse problems; and ethical and professional standards to be followed in the alcohol/substance abuse treatment field. Applicants are expected to acquire additional knowledge regarding education, counseling and treatment methodologies as additional experience is gained.

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor II

This is the mid-level position in the Alcohol/Substance Abuse job classification series. Applicants are expected to possess considerable knowledge in alcohol/substance abuse and addiction issues; best practices and treatment methodologies for counseling individuals with substance abuse problems; dual diagnosis issues; and ethical and professional standards to be followed in the alcohol/substance abuse treatment field.



EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor I

  • With direction and supervision, conducts client intakes, prepares individual assessments, treatment plans and recommendations.
  • Prepares clear and concise reports.
  • Collaborates with public and private agencies including but not limited to the Courts and Probation.
  • Provides education, counseling, crisis intervention and case management services for individuals and their families with alcohol/substance abuse problems.
  • Collaborates and coordinates referrals with a variety of treatment resources including but not limited to inpatient residential treatment facilities or self-help groups as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison with individuals, families, community groups and public and private agencies interested in the prevention of chemical dependency, educational and rehabilitation activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor II

  • Conducts duties as described within the Counselor I classification but is assigned more complex, difficult cases with less supervision and direction.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

All levels

Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge and understanding about the science of addiction, alcohol/substance abuse issues and related problems resulting from alcohol and chemical dependency. Applicants must show a commitment to continuing education and rehabilitation activities. Applicants must be clean and sober at least five years in order to be considered.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor I

Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least one year of alcohol/substance abuse counseling experience.

 

Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counselor II

Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least three years of substance abuse counseling experience.

 

Valid CA Association of Drug and Alcohol Counselors certification (CADAAC) highly recommended.

Individuals working towards certification or a degree program in the substance abuse treatment or related field may substitute units for a year’s experience.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License issued by the CA State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Applicants must be clean and sober at least five years.

NOTES

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mobility to work in a standard office environment; use standard office equipment; physical ability to sit or otherwise remain stationary at work post for long periods of time; manual dexterity to use standard office equipment and supplies and to manipulate both single sheets of paper and large documents holders (binders, manuals, etc.); vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone.
